Als Zikaden-Wirt:
Mir ist keine Zikadenart bekannt, die die Walnuss favorisiert, es werden nur Zikaden mit einem Nahrungsspektrum der Art polyphag für (Laub-) Gehölze erwartet.

ZWIB I - Gemeiner Bocksdorn

Zikaden-Wirtspflanzen in Berlin: Lycium barbarum

Ordnung: Nachtschattenartige (Solanales)
Familie: Nachtschattengewächse (Solanaceae)
Strauch (ausdauernd, verholzend), Neophyt

Stictocephala bisonia and its host Colutea arborescens

After making several observations of Stictocephala bisonia on Robinia pseudoacacia trees (https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/82872-stictocephala-bisonia-and-its-host-robinia-pseudoacacia), I can now cautiously add the less common Colutea arborescens to my list of this hopper's popular hosts in Berlin as well - I observed 3 adults on 2 Colutea arborescens bushes:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/180541508
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/178566011
In both cases Robinia pseudoacacia trees were nearby, but they are among the most common trees in Berlin.

On Fieberiellini

Fieberiella florii/septentrionalis and Synophropsis lauri are among the bigger true hoppers in Berlin and they feed on woody plants (various bushes, ivy). Adults of most other hoppers that feed on woody plants, with the exception of the small Typhlocybinae, typically do so on stems (twigs) or petioles, only rarely on leaves. These Fieberiellini species, however, often feed sitting on leaves, and the associated observation shows their apparent typical and quite unique feeding posture - head down, butt and hind legs(!) up.
I wonder, why they often feed on leaves, all three species are brown and their posture also might work as camouflage, looking somewhat like buds, when on twigs, but on leaves they stand out like a sore thumb.
Also, what's up with that posture? Does it allow for a kind of "jump start", perhaps they like to sit on the upper side of leaves trading camouflage for an ideal position to escape? Just like many hoppers on woody plants (again with the exception of Typhlocybinae), they have a relatively short flight distance.
Any information or theories welcome.

Stictocephala bisonia and its host Robinia pseudoacacia

Today I found five Stictocephala bisonia on a group of young Robinia pseudoacacia trees, two escaped unphotographed though. I had started to wonder, if I would ever find any hoppers on the 'black locust', and had not realized that this tree is one of Stictocephala bisonia's main hosts, both originating from North America.
Looking at some of the pictures, you could get the impression that the hoppers' appearance is a camouflage specifically adapted to those trees. Some Rosaceae - main hosts, too - fit well, too, of course.

Gargara genistae

I observed at least seven Gargara genistae specimens on 2 Colutea arborescens bushes, 1-2m apart, bundling them in 2 observations, 1 for each host plant. Most likely there were more hoppers. The bushes are close to railroad trails, ruderal area.
Impressions:

  • they are excellent flyers, fast and steady, more like bees, not erratic like Cicadellidae I observed
  • nevertheless they are extremely reluctant to take off, sometimes circling around stems, sometimes running away instead
  • all of them were on twigs/stems
  • 1 specimen was attended by ant, it looked like it tried to milk it for honeydew and tried to defend it from me

Issus issues I

The new generation arrived! On August 1st I observed an Issus coleoptratus nymph, (relatively) freshly hatched, already on a trip along the top of a fence, just as its older relatives. Before, my observations of N1 and N2 nymphs were mostly of them stationary on the underside of ivy leaves, while this was one was 5-6m away from ivy, close to a young Acer pseudoplatanus.

Japananus hyalinus nymphs on elms

On July, 12th I observed two late instar nymphs of Japananus hyalinus on two elms (Ulmus sp., observations of those two bushes/young trees are linked in the hopper observations), making me wonder, if elms are a suitable. In a park with many Acer campestre trees and other Acer species, and could be just a coincidence, of course.
