Will a ‘Trap and Release’ Plan for Coyotes Stop Attacks on Humans and Pets?

On October 3, Councilman Mitchell Englander, a member of the Council’s Personnel and Animal Welfare (PAW) Committee, introduced a motion (CF-16-0585-S2), based on "an increase in coyote sightings in parks, open spaces and neighborhoods endangering all people, especially children."

Trapping and relocating coyotes? That’s a really bad idea

To live in Los Angeles is to live within howling distance of coyotes. They are there night and day, usually at a safe remove, more often heard than seen. Coyotes are wild animals yet seasoned urbanites, bedding down in lush shrubbery around our houses and feasting on fruit from trees, pet food foolishly left outside, garbage in unsecured trash cans, and water from fountains and backyard irrigation systems.

The Coyote Champion.

Camilla Fox is a force of nature conservation. She and I first crossed trails in Denali National Park while traveling as strangers on a shuttle bus, where we casually struck up a conversation about our shared passion for animals and their protection. Fast forward two decades and Fox is now founding executive director of Project Coyote, a lean and highly effective nonprofit that promotes coexistence between people and wildlife — especially North America’s most maligned and persecuted native carnivores.

One coyote treated for mange in Bakersfield, group says another remains.

A nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation organization from Simi Valley travelled to Bakersfield Sunday to track and medicate a coyote that has been spotted by Westchester residents over the past few weeks.

The team from Wildlife Care of Southern California had been sent photos by local residents with the date, time and location attached. Most of the coyote sightings reported in the media have been in the Westchester area.
