Today we drove out to those granitic outcroppings near Caracaraí, which are uplifted as part of the Guianan Shield. There were hundreds of Tropidurus hispidus and some Ameiva ameiva everywhere. We walked around some edge habitat and saw what seemed like billions of Ameiva. I think it would be a good place to examine sun effects on thermoregulation in warm tropical lizards. I’m really excited about doing a little study on the thermoregulation of Tropidurus on the rocky outcroppings near here.
POST-SCRIPT: I was right, the granite outcropping was a neat place to study and eventually we published this paper from those efforts.
After lunch, we (Laurie and I) drove out to the savannah and tore through some termite mounds with our four-pronged potato rakes (handle cut off for portability). We only caught one Kentropyx striatus and several Bufo (=Rhinella). Not very exciting. Oh yeah, Laurie and I went through stumps by the rocky outcroppings and found three Leptodeira and five or six geckos (Hemidactylus). These geckos may or may not be different from what’s on our hotel.
POST-SCRIPT: turns out these were different. Hemidactylus palaichthus, the native, was in the stumps while H. mabouia, the non-native, was on the buildings.
After dinner we did a little road driving. We found some frogs: Scinax ruber and a microhylid (Elachistocleis). We also go one snake (Oxyrhopus). I can’t wait to get out to the ranch and set up tomorrow! It’s so nice to unpack and actually begin to work for a change. I’m ready to get down and dirty.

Hoje fomos até aqueles afloramentos graníticos próximos a Caracaraí, que são erguidos como parte do Escudo das Guianas. Havia centenas de Tropidurus hispidus e alguns Ameiva ameiva por toda parte. Caminhamos por algum habitat periférico e vimos o que pareciam ser bilhões de Ameiva. Acho que seria um bom lugar para examinar os efeitos do sol na termorregulação em lagartos tropicais quentes. Estou muito animado para fazer um pequeno estudo sobre a termorregulação do Tropidurus nos afloramentos rochosos próximos daqui.
PÓS-SCRIPT: Eu estava certo, o afloramento de granito era um ótimo lugar para estudar e eventualmente publicamos este artigo desses esforços.
Depois do almoço, nós (Laurie e eu) fomos até a savana e destruímos alguns cupinzeiros com nossos ancinhos de batata de quatro pontas (cabo cortado para facilitar o transporte). Capturamos apenas um Kentropyx striatus e vários Bufo (=Rhinella). Não é muito emocionante. Ah, sim, Laurie e eu passamos por tocos perto dos afloramentos rochosos e encontramos três Leptodeira e cinco ou seis lagartixas (Hemidactylus). Essas lagartixas podem ou não ser diferentes das que estão em nosso hotel.
PÓS-SCRIPT: acontece que eram diferentes. Hemidactylus palaichthus, o nativo, estava nos tocos enquanto H. mabouia, o não-nativo, estava nos edifícios.
Depois do jantar, dirigimos um pouco pela estrada. Encontramos alguns sapos: Scinax ruber e um microilídeo (Elachistocleis). Também vamos uma cobra (Oxyrhopus). Mal posso esperar para ir para o rancho e me preparar amanhã! É tão bom desfazer as malas e realmente começar a trabalhar, para variar. Estou pronto para descer e me sujar.

Hoy nos dirigimos a esos afloramientos graníticos cerca de Caracaraí, que se levantan como parte del Escudo Guayanés. Había cientos de Tropidurus hispidus y algunos Ameiva ameiva por todas partes. Caminamos por un hábitat periférico y vimos lo que parecían miles de millones de Ameiva. Creo que sería un buen lugar para examinar los efectos del sol sobre la termorregulación en lagartos tropicales cálidos. Tengo muchas ganas de hacer un pequeño estudio sobre la termorregulación de Tropidurus en los afloramientos rocosos cercanos a aquí.
POST-SCRIPT: Tenía razón, el afloramiento de granito era un buen lugar para estudiar y finalmente publicamos este artículo de esos esfuerzos.
Después del almuerzo, nosotros (Laurie y yo) condujimos hasta la sabana y atravesamos algunos montículos de termitas con nuestros rastrillos para patatas de cuatro puntas (el mango se cortó para poder transportarlo). Sólo capturamos un Kentropyx striatus y varios Bufo (=Rhinella). No muy emocionante. Ah, sí, Laurie y yo atravesamos tocones junto a los afloramientos rocosos y encontramos tres Leptodeira y cinco o seis geckos (Hemidactylus). Estos geckos pueden o no ser diferentes de los que hay en nuestro hotel.
POST-SCRIPT: resulta que estos eran diferentes. Hemidactylus palaichthus, el nativo, estaba en los tocones mientras que H. mabouia, el no nativo, estaba en los edificios.
Después de cenar condujimos un poco por la carretera. Encontramos algunas ranas: Scinax ruber y un microhílido (Elachistocleis). También vamos una serpiente (Oxyrhopus). ¡No puedo esperar para salir al rancho y prepararlo mañana! Es muy agradable desempacar y comenzar a trabajar para variar. Estoy listo para ensuciarme.

Aujourd'hui, nous nous sommes rendus en voiture vers ces affleurements granitiques près de Caracaraí, qui font partie du bouclier guyanais. Il y avait des centaines de Tropidurus hispidus et quelques Ameiva ameiva partout. Nous avons contourné un habitat périphérique et avons vu ce qui semblait être des milliards d'Ameiva. Je pense que ce serait un bon endroit pour examiner les effets du soleil sur la thermorégulation chez les lézards tropicaux chauds. J'ai vraiment hâte de faire une petite étude sur la thermorégulation du Tropidurus sur les affleurements rocheux près d'ici.
POST-SCRIPT : J'avais raison, l'affleurement de granit était un endroit idéal pour étudier et finalement nous avons publié cet article de ces efforts.
Après le déjeuner, nous (Laurie et moi) sommes allés en voiture dans la savane et avons déchiré quelques termitières avec nos râteaux à pommes de terre à quatre dents (poignée coupée pour plus de portabilité). Nous n'avons capturé qu'un seul Kentropyx striatus et plusieurs Bufo (=Rhinella). Pas très excitant. Oh oui, Laurie et moi avons fouillé les souches près des affleurements rocheux et avons trouvé trois Leptodeira et cinq ou six geckos (Hemidactylus). Ces geckos peuvent être différents ou non de ceux de notre hôtel.
POST-SCRIPT : il s'avère que ceux-ci étaient différents. Hemidactylus palaichthus, l'indigène, se trouvait dans les souches tandis que H. mabouia, l'allogène, était sur les immeubles.
Après le dîner, nous avons fait un petit tour en voiture. Nous avons trouvé quelques grenouilles : Scinax ruber et un microhylide (Elachistocleis). Nous allons aussi un serpent (Oxyrhopus). J'ai hâte d'aller au ranch et de m'installer demain ! C’est tellement agréable de déballer et de commencer à travailler pour changer. Je suis prêt à me salir.

Vandaag zijn we naar de granieten uitstulpingen bij Caracaraí gereden, die zijn opgetrokken als onderdeel van het Guianan Schild. Er waren overal honderden Tropidurus hispidus en enkele Ameiva ameiva. We liepen rond een randhabitat en zagen wat leek op miljarden Ameiva. Ik denk dat het een goede plek zou zijn om de effecten van de zon op de thermoregulatie bij warme tropische hagedissen te onderzoeken. Ik ben erg enthousiast over het doen van een klein onderzoek naar de thermoregulatie van Tropidurus op de rotsachtige uitstulpingen hier vlakbij.
POSTSCRIPT: Ik had gelijk, de granieten rots was een mooie plek om te bestuderen en uiteindelijk publiceerden we dit artikel van deze inspanningen.
Na de lunch reden wij (Laurie en ik) naar de savanne en scheurden door enkele termietenheuvels met onze viertandige aardappelharken (handvat afgesneden voor draagbaarheid). We vingen slechts één Kentropyx striatus en verschillende Bufo (=Rhinella). Niet erg spannend. Oh ja, Laurie en ik gingen door stronken bij de rotsuitstulpingen en vonden drie Leptodeira en vijf of zes gekko's (Hemidactylus). Deze gekko's kunnen wel of niet verschillen van wat er in ons hotel staat.
POSTSCRIPT: het bleek dat deze verschillend waren. Hemidactylus palaichthus, de inboorling, bevond zich in de stronken terwijl H. mabouia, de niet-inheemse, bevond zich op de gebouwen.
Na het eten hebben we een stukje over de weg gereden. We hebben enkele kikkers gevonden: Scinax ruber en een microhylid (Elachistocleis). We gaan ook met één slang (Oxyrhopus). Ik kan niet wachten om morgen naar de ranch te gaan en alles op te zetten! Het is zo leuk om uit te pakken en daadwerkelijk aan de slag te gaan voor de verandering. Ik ben klaar om vies te worden.
