Flora in Dorothy Wordsworth's Grasmere Journal

26 July 2017
Today I walked the 1 ½ miles to the Jerwood Center in the pouring rain. I sat upstairs in Dove Cottage and talked with Sally Hall, the gardener of the Wordsworth Trust, all morning. I have so much to learn about the flowers of Grasmere, and Sally is an excellent teacher. She has been the gardener at Dove Cottage for twenty years. I just need several more weeks to get a good grasp of the names. Alas! I have to return to Texas on Sunday. I spent the afternoon in the archive looking at books and manuscripts related to the flora of the Lake District. I also discovered in the journal that Dorothy made herself a pair of shoes for all her wandering around the lakes. After supper we walked up Green Byrne Bottom to see the waterfalls. As Dorothy noted in July, a few of the brackens are beginning to turn yellow. They also have a distinctive smell.
