I grew up on Long Island, NY, where I first got interested in Nature during some summer day camps at Cold Spring Harbor. I was a backyard birdwatcher, and knew most of the trees as a young boy.
In the early 1970's I took a plant systematics class at University of New Hampshire, and had a GREAT professor. I wish I knew his name. I got hooked on botany then.
In 1978, I moved to California where I kept botanizing, and I also got more heavily involved in birdwatching.
In 1995 I discovered bryophytes. Once I discovered that bryology in California was in its infancy, I gave up everything else to study them. Now that I am retired (from commercial heating and air conditioning) I have time to resume bird watching and vascular botany, and I am beginning study of lichens
Of course, when I go out in nature, everything catches my eye, and I can't resist taking pictures.
