1) Pictured is a juvenile (pale breast) and an adult (overall darker)
2) Feathers are not waterproof, after swimming, they are often seen drying their feathers
3) Crook in the neck, visible during flight
4) Nonbreeding adult has basic plumage (no white 2 crests)
5) Orange base of bill and blue eyes
This is one of two wolverines that were running through a field just north of Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters 7 miles north of Ketchum back in 2008. I only photographed one, but a pair was definitely present.
White “scarf” on round black head (spot for females), small.
red shafts visible in tail, black chevron pattern on chest
bright yellow legs, barring on back, greyish white underparts
1) Black plumage with a slight gloss to the plumage
2) Thick black bill
3) Feathers encroaching on the top of the bill.
4) Usually seen in small groups
