huge, old, rotten and smelly, but still recognizable
on recently fallen dead Fagus covered with Neonectria
Unfortunately, I was not able to remove this specimen to study it further
on rotten wood standing over a pond
Very firm to touch. Difficult to cut a sample. Hardwoods. Mountain.
The gills have on both sides, structures that look like teeth! When I examined them in the microscope, I couldn't find any thing resembling teeth but only what resembles skeletocystidia 2.4-2.9 um which it is probably what makes it so tough. Spores are 3.7 x 7.9-8.6 um. Basidia 29 x 4.9 um with four sterigmata. There are clamps present. KOH softened the tissues.
Found alone on decaying wood near conifers, moss, and fern. Thick stalk measuring 2.2 cm. Cap is 1 cm in width. Interior stem is not hollow but is rubbery in texture. No visible gills.
They sit upon what was a mushroom cap. The largest is about the size of a pencil eraser.
