This lichen (if it was a lichen) was seen growing horizontally out of a vertical rock face. The hair was about 3-4 cm long. The site is part way up a point marked "4030" in Canadian topo maps. From "4030" it's a level walk onto the edge of the Muller Ice Cap. The elevation of this observation must have been in the vicinity of 3500'. The location is well above local shrub line and pretty extreme with respect to climate. From "4030" one can see icy Eureka Pass which leads to the west side of Axel Heiberg Island.
these grow up to 3" tall, between rocks at or near the coastline as well as on the plateau above the glacier, adjacent to the ice sheet.
