Horned Owls hoot in Anza Valley.

According to the Audubon Society, “The Great Horned Owl is in many ways the quintessential owl. Picture an owl in your head, and you’ve probably imagined the Great Horned. It is a large, thick-bodied bird with large eyes and two distinct tufts on its head. It is relatively common throughout California and North America.

Changing wildfires in the California's Sierra Nevada may threaten northern goshawks.

Wildfire is a natural process in the forests of the western US, and many species have evolved to tolerate, if not benefit from it. But wildfire is changing. Research in the journal Biological Conservation, published by Elsevier, suggests fire, as it becomes more frequent and severe, poses a substantial risk to goshawks in the Sierra Nevada region.

Official bird names are boring; why not call them what you want?

Something like lesser goldfinch or California scrub-jay might be appropriate for identifying an unknown specimen, but utterly lack the sense of warm familiarity one looks for in addressing and acknowledging everyday companions.

Counting Birds At Sequoia National Park.

With the year-end holidays drawing near, it's time to count bird species at Sequoia National Park in California.

Each year, tens of thousands of volunteers across North America take part in the Christmas Bird Count, a massive citizen-science project. The data collected in this wildlife census is used to assess the health of bird populations and help guide conservation action.

Move over Christmas shopping, it’s birding time.

It isn’t a snow field, but rather a field of snow geese.

It’s travel time in the Pacific Flyway, and Butte, Glenn and Tehama counties are smack in the middle of the migrating waterfowl highway. Like holiday travelers, the bird migrate from colder to warmer climates, settling in waterways and empty fields to feed.
