Round Red Riddle

Round, red object found at the base of a cultivated aster during a rainy evening.
The aster had not had flowers on it for a while, and there were no seed-bearing
plants nearby.
Perhaps it is an egg sac or a fungal fruit body? I could/should have waited and
observed it, but too late now: the second photo is the object cracked open. It
was quite dry and brittle. Submitted as"Plantae", for now.
