Grand Slam of Chickadees

Chestnut-backed Chickadee is an uncommon resident in BC’s eastern Southern Interior and they are very rare in the southern Rocky Mountains. So when John Pitcher, former Kootenay National Park Naturalist, called today and said he had one at his feeder I grabbed the camera and headed to his place in Invermere.

They are not the easiest bird to photograph since they flit around a lot, moving from branch to branch and zipping in and out of the feeder. It was feeding along side the more common Black-capped and Mountain Chickadees.

Now with this Chestnut-backed Chickadee sighting and some luck searching the higher elevations this winter for a Boreal Chickadee I might just get the “Grand Slam of Chickadees”
