Unexpected Fish Catches

I went to one of Longview's urban creeks on Friday to catch microfish. I wasn't hopeful that I would catch anything new, because the only species I've found in the creek are bluegill, mosquitofish, and blackstripe topminnow. Sure enough, the first fish was a bluegill. I kept trying and hooked a longear sunfish!

I had noticed a dripping sound while fishing, and traced the source to a sewer pipe leaking directly into the creek. Gross! I reported it to the city and went to the park on the other side of the creek, away from leaky sewage.

I cast my line and after a few minutes, the bobber went under. By the feel of it, I thought I got a large sunfish. As I reeled it in, the fish came close to the surface and I saw that it was the wrong shape for a sunfish. "What is that?" I thought. I reeled it in some more and it was a catfish! I was shocked that a 6-inch catfish got on such a tiny hook. It was really unexpected. I didn't think there could be anything but micro species down in there because the creek is very polluted and has a horrible stench.

Today I went to Mineola Nature Preserve to get some fish observations. I went to the "brim pond" by the parking lot, where lots of kids were learning how to fish. I caught several bluegill and then hiked a mile to the fishing pier on the slough. I was trying to catch micros again and a huge bass got on the line. Since my microfish pole wasn't made to handle big fish, the line snapped and it got away. It seems that when I'm microfishing, big bass get on the line and snap it. However, when I use my heavy pole to get the bass, they won't bite. Sneaky things. Mondays are half days at work, so I'm going back tomorrow with my heavy pole to get that bass that got away.

If you want to go Mineola Nature Preserve to get those bass, remember the park is catch and release ONLY.

Obscured so that I don't encourage kids to go into this creek. TCEQ has declared it so highly contaminated with raw sewage that it is "too dangerous for wading or swimming."

This is the last thing I expected to catch on a size 24 hook. I was trying for microfish! Caught with pink crappie dough. Also my first catfish!

Fish released alive after being photographed.
