I am an ecologist at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and former Director of the Centre for Invasion Biology (https://blogs.sun.ac.za/cib/).

I work on biological invasions, mainly invasive plants and particularly trees and shrubs. The genera Acacia, Ailanthus, Alnus, Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Hakea, Melaleuca, Myoporum, Paraserianthes, Pinus, Prosopis, Psidium, Quercus, Schinus, Syzygium, the subfamily Bambusoideae and the family Cactaceae have featured prominently in the work of my lab group. Most of my work has been conducted in South Africa, especially in the fynbos and savanna biomes, but I have worked in many other parts of the world. I am interested in natural history in general.

iNaturalist is a crucial tool in the research of my lab. For example, see how it helped us piece together the current distribution of oaks (Quercus species) (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0254629924000851), Myoporum species (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0254629924001790) and Syzygium australe (https://doi.org/10.3391/bir.2023.12.3.01) in South Africa.

We also used iNaturalist to develop an approach for monitoring the occurrence and spread of a major invasive species, the polyphagous shothole borer; see https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10340-024-01744-7.
