Macrosteles sardus

Macrosteles sardus Ribaut (1948).

M. sardus is a species of leafhopper with a limited distribution in central and western Europe: Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom (den Bieman and de Haas, 2019; Holzinger, 2009; Jach and Hoch, 2013; Niedringhaus et al., 2010; Seljak, 2004; Świerczewski and Walczak. 2011; et al, 2016).

Occurrence in the UK

M. sardus is listed in bold in the current checklist of UK Auchenorrhyncha (last updated 11th Jan 2021) indicating that it is a new addition to the British fauna since the list produced by Le Quesne & Payne (1981).

Currently, in the UK there are four accepted records for M. sardus and one pending review, as follows:
There are two accepted records of M.sardus in iNaturalist

  • the first record for the UK being on the 19th Sept 2020 from Epsom, (link)
  • and a second from 27th Sept 2020 from Folkstone, Kent (link)

Both these records were confirmed by Michael Wilson on the basis of dissection of males.

There are three additional records of M.sardus in iRecord

  • two from 2022 on the 16th Sept and 18th Sept 2022, and one from 2023 on 6th Oct 2023. All three records are from Berkshire (link to iRecord records)

The 2022 records were confirmed by Alan Stuart on the basis of dissected males while the record from 2023, is also a male, is yet to be reviewed. The two iRecord records from 2022 have been incorporated into both the UK's NBN Atlas (here) the international GBIF database (here).
