Mid-successional, mixed conifer forest, dominant over story Pseudotsuga menziesii and Thuja plicata

Leaves are simple and whorled in groups of 4-5, with netted venation, and elliptic with cuspidate tips. Plants are small, 3-6” high. No fruits or flowers visible at this time.

Habitat: residential/natural area
Diagnostic feature: fruit and leaf shape
Phenological phase: fruiting

Leaves are alternate and elliptical with pointed tip are serration on the margins.
No catkins present.
Fruit is spherical and hirsutulous and in clusters of two.

Mid-successional, mixed conifer forest, dominant over story Pseudotsuga menziesii and Thuja plicata

Leaves alternate, new growth lighter green / older growth darker green, leaves serrate, waxy, pointed. Growing in mostly shade. Small, rounded green fruits extending from junctures between leaf and stem.

Flat, branching, smooth, segmented needles. Scruffy reddish brown bark. No visible fruits, flowers, or cones at this time.
