The swamp azalea is located in the water. The flower buds of the plant stood out, as did the brown, open seedheads of the plant.
This structure was on a Vaccinium sp. in the Pine Barrens. Other people in the group thought it was a type of gall.
This pitch pine has epicormic growths, probably in response to fire.
The second image is of a nearby decomposed pine with knobby areas that have persisted during the decomposition process. Is it possible that these knobby areas are the epicormic growth areas shown on the primary photo?
This interesting plant almost disappeared into its surroundings, visually. I look forward to seeing this when in bloom!
