Last photo shows Hop Hornbeam leaf on left vs. Beech leaf on right. Thin, papery Hop Hornbeam leaves deteriorate almost completely over the winter whereas the more leathery, tough leaves of Beech do not.
On soil at base of overturned tree. Photo 4 shows characteristic capsule. Orange peristome teeth divided halfway down into two hyaline papillose forks.
Wet fire-suppressed savanna by powerline. Branch leaf 3.1 x 0.7mm, stem leaf 0.8 x 0.6mm.
