This is a downed P. serotina first observed last fall/winter. From the trunk, many saplings were growing, and because they were young, leafless trees, we questioned if the saplings were P. serotina or perhaps B. lenta using the P. Serotina as a “ nurse” tree. Today it was clear that the young saplings are all P. serotina, based, finally, on their leaves!!
