Camellia japonica usually blooms in early spring, but it has already bloomed probably because it is warm on the coast.

Skycat this is the specimen you identified, thank you very much. It’s at least 5 m or 6 m tall and there are three or four others in the vicinity but this is the only one in flower at the moment, it has multiple flower buds so I assume it’s going to flower on and off for the next month or two.
