The rosettes on this rock outcrop are usual in their vivid true green color when hydrated, but are unusual in their abundant production of asexual propagules, for this is normally an apotheciate (sexually reproductive) species.

A peculiar example, for this individual has abundant squamules (or are they isidia?) in addition to a scattering of developing apothecia.

2nd photo - an apothecium subtended by black cilia can be seen a little above the right end of the millimeter scale. Until I found that apothecium, this lichen had me foxed.

This twig (see 3rd photo) provides sibe-by-side comparison of the almost inscrutably similar Hypotrachyna livida on the left, and Myelochroa glabina on the right.

Myelochroa galbina has

• lobes of the rosette that overlap on the edges
• thallus sections that tend to fork in a "V" rather having a main running section with lateral branches
• thallus adhering as if pressed to the substrate (is adnate)

This twig (see 3rd photo) provides sibe-by-side comparison of the almost inscrutably similar Hypotrachyna livida on the left, and Myelochroa glabina on the right.

Hypotrachyna livida has

• thalli that are not as closely adhering to the substrate
• distinct gaps between thallus edges
• a thallus that branches laterally, with comparatively long straight sections of thallus (this individual is not exactly exemplary of said trait)

A small section of the Scalewort was removed, was rehydrated, and then photographed. See 4th photo.

In the desiccated state (photo 3) the lobes/leaves are curled under.

In the hydrated state (photo 4) the lobes/leaves are slightly cupped, but the edges are not revolute/tightly rolled.

For comparative purposes, 3rd photo: right, and low center - lichen species of observation - Physcia aipolia; far left, Physconia subpallida ; center top, smaller greener lichen - Phaeophyscia pumilior.

Near the center of the photo, note the lobe reaching over the lip of the apothecium, as if the lichen were in contemplation, perhaps of the photographer. Hmmm. ; )

The lovely gold hues of this Xanthomendoza hasseana lichen are beautifully contrasted by the verdant green of the lichen it rests upon, a fertile Phaeophyscia ciliata.
