Tom White's new friend is 91" = 7.6 feet = 2.30 m tall, since he is 69" tall. If this barrel grew at 1 cm / year, similar to the documented growth in Deep Canyon, this barrel cactus is 230 years old.

Photographed on a Canyoneer hike at Oakoasis County Open Space Preserve at 12620. Wildcat Canyon Road near trail at approximately 2:00 pm on a boulder. Have another snapshot of the lizard showing the habitat. My camera didn't get set up with date or GPS function yet. Hiking with Canyoneer Jerry Jacobs who first spotted the lizard.

Many small plants in an area that was weeded last year. Sandy soil.

This is my first observation of this plant. This is the only plant of this species in the Arroyo Salado anywhere near this location. This species normally grows in more rocky, steep areas to the north of this location.

But in the desert, plants can appear to be dead and then resprout from their roots.
