SA iNaturalists - May 2024 Update

May is always a quiet month on iNat in SA. The lack of rain this year also means a delay in the emergence of some seasonal species. Nevertheless 712 observers contributed 11,377 observations covering 2,275 species.

We also surpassed 700,000 observations total in South Australia in early June. That's an amazing contribution from more than 9,200 citizen scientists.

The Great Southern Bioblitz is returning again in Spring this year. The Great Southern Bioblitz 2024 Umbrella Project is up. So too is the Greater Adelaide project and the City of Onkaparinga project. Join up to one or all to show your support. Let's make this the best year yet.

SA iNaturalists - April 2024 Update

Over 17,000 observations in April from 962 observers! An impressive feat given the time of year and the rains are yet to start. With the City Nature Challenge occurring entirely in April, this alone brought in just under 5,000 observations across SA over only 4 days.

Will we reach 700,000 observations total in SA this May? We're real close now.

SA iNaturalists - November 2023 Update

We've Surpassed 600,000 Verifiable Observations!

Sometime in the last few days we reached 600,000 verifiable observations uploaded in South Australia!

Congratulations to all who have contributed to this milestone. These observations from nearly 8,000 people represent over 600,000 separate instances where someone took the time to stop and engage with the natural world, and then took the time to share that encounter with others.

All of these records have been synced with the Atlas of Living Australia and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, databases aimed at providing anyone, anywhere, open access to data about all types of life on Earth.

The first observations in SA were uploaded around mid-2011 and had only reached 4,500 by the end of 2017. Since then however the rate has increase dramatically. We surpassed 100,000 observations in May 2020. It took 9 years to reach that milestone. It took only 12 months to add the second 100,000, only 10 months to add the third 100,000, only 8 months to add the fourth 100,000, and only 7 months to add the fifth 100,000. Since then we've added another 100,000 in only 5 and a half months, averaging 578 observations every single day!

From November 24th to 27th the community contributed nearly 6,000 observations across South Australia as part of the Great Southern BioBlitz. As a whole over 7,000 people participated in the BioBlitz contributing over 220,000 observations of more than 25,000 species across the southern hemisphere.
