Fall Master Gardener BioBlitz Coming Up

Hello Gardeners and BioBlitzers,

Our final garden BioBlitz of 2021 will happen on Saturday, September 25th. Please check out our Fall 2021 Master Gardener BioBlitz page, to make sure that you have joined the Fall project.

In an earlier post on the OSU website, I accidentally linked the Fall BioBlitz to the project page for our Summer BioBlitz. Thus, I wanted to send a quick note to invite everyone over to the Fall BioBlitz page (the link I provided, earlier), and to ask you to join us on September 25th.

The fall birds have started to come back to the garden, as are the fall insects. I look forward to seeing your observations, and learning more about the seasonal passage of time and life in our gardens.

Take care,
Gail

173 Species from Oregon Gardens, in a Single Day

Thank you BioBlitzers,

With your help, we documented 173 species of plant, fungi, and animals from 18 different Oregon gardens. Great job!!

If you had fun with this BioBlitz, please mark your calendars for our Fall Garden BioBlitz, on September 25, 2021. Please remember to join the project page, at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fall-2021-master-gardener-bioblitz

I love that we're all learning about the nature in our gardens, as well as in each other's gardens.

Take care,
Gail

109 Species and Counting!

As the temperature warms up, insect activity will slow down. I am taking a break, and seeking shade indoors. I'll keep my camera ready to capture any birds that come by the window. I'll start up again as the temperatures cool. Tonight, I'll turn on our porch light to see what moths we might attract. Happy BioBlitzing to all!

Off to a Great Start!

Way to go, BioBlitzers!! You have over 60 species/taxa observed, before 9am!

I took a short loop around the garden this morning, to capture a few bees, flies, one wasp, and a surprise hummingbird! Now, I'm enjoying coffee and the Olympics, while hoping that the Cooper's Hawk that came to visit, yesterday, will once again make a return. I'll be dividing my time between capturing observations, and dropping in to ID other's observations.

Have a good BioBlitz Day! Please reach out if you have any questions, by commenting on this post. You can also email me at: gail.langellotto@oregonstate.edu.

Summer Garden BioBlitz launches, tomorrow!

Thank you for signing up for the 2021 Summer Garden BioBlitz. Our goal is to document wild organisms that can be found in gardens, during a single day in the summer. This will help us to build out better field guides, to help Oregon gardeners become more familiar with the wild plants (often called 'weeds'), birds, insects, mammals, fungi, and more, that can be found in gardens.

If you have an problems during the BioBlitz, please reach out to me by commenting on this post. I will do my best to support you from afar.

Also, if you are in an area that has smoke from wildfires, or where the weather is hot or otherwise challenging ~ please take care of yourself! Be wary of sun exposure. Keep cool and hydrated, and REST! Tomorrow should be fun, and not taxing in any way.

Looking forward to learning with all of you.

~Gail Langellotto
