August Update - 8/9

July was another good month for Ohio Dragonfly Survey.

Numbers

For July 2022, we are around 7,800 Research Grade observations from 457 Observers covering 99 species in 81 counties. This number will still climb a bit as people clear up their backlog.

For all of 2022 we have over 24,000 RG observations from 840+ Observers in all 88 counties. Pretty good pace, in line with recent years.

We have a total of 131 species so far in 2022. 13 counties reporting 50 or more species.

Previous year: # Species recorded
2017: 127
2018: 135
2019: 139
2020: 141
2021: 140

So we're ahead of 2017, on par with 2018. we'll need some luck to match 2019-2021.

We have 102 new county records for 2022. This is comparable to last year.

Previous year: # County Records
2017: 174
2018: 326
2019: 319
2020: 114
2021: 111

Blue Dasher (1,841) is easily the most reported, although Eastern Pondhawk reports are closing quickly.

Ebony Jewelwing (273) and Common Whitetail (261) have the most users reporting.

Franklin (1,917) and Stark (1,750) are the clear leaders on number of observations/county.

Franklin (97) and Summit (90) counties have the most iNat contributors.

Montgomery has the most species at 74. Lucas follows with 71.

County Complete

We're getting close on several species to having them reported in all 88 Ohio counties in 2022.

Species: Needed Counties
Blue Dasher: Wyandot
Fragile Forktail: Adams
Common Whitetail: Gallia, Morgan, Paulding
Widow Skimmer: Paulding, Union, Van Wert
Eastern Pondhawk: Knox, Paulding, Wyandot
Eastern Forktail: Adams, Athens, Gallia, Scioto
Eastern Amberwing: Knox, Paulding, Pike, Van Wert, Wyandot

Goals

We started the season with some target Counties based on recorded observations and species. We wanted every county to get enough new observations so their OOS total was 600 or more observations and 60 or more species.

We needed 118 new county records over 20 counties, so far we have 25 CR in 13 counties. Only 2 counties have been taken off (Harrison and Preble). A few counties are still possible (Fayette, Huron, Lawrence, Monroe). Note that historically the likelihood of new county records goes down considerably after July.

We needed 2,598 observations over 23 counties, so far we have 3,727 in 23 counties. Happy to report we are down to 1 county that still needs observations (Meigs). The others (Belmont, Brown, Carroll, Columbiana, Fulton, Guernsey, Hardin, Harrison, Henry, Holmes, Huron, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marion, Monroe, Mercer, Morrow, Noble, Perry, Putnam, Seneca, Van Wert) have enough new observations to meet the 600 goal. Nicely done.

Mid-August Update

Cooling evenings and shorter days, some species numbers seem to be trending down. But we have late summer species picking up!

It's been a couple weeks since we've had a report on Painted Skimmer, so they may be one of the species that are done. The historical late date for Painted is Aug 9. For 2022 we have 278 observations. This nearly double the previous high of 143 in 2019 and is one of the stand out species for the year.

Another species with good numbers is Ebony Jewelwing - and it's not done yet. Our latest observation for Ebony is Sep 26. We have 1,008 observations at this point. The previous high is 1015 in 2019. We should be able to push past that number.

Altogether, there are 27 species that will have their most observations in a year. Ten or so additional species could end the season with highest ever numbers.

County Complete!

Fragile Forktail is now recorded in all 88 Ohio counties! Thanks to monicap273 for the two Aug 12 observations.

Widow Skimmer is now complete (8/16). I’ll post the observations for Van Wert and Paulding later this week.

Who's next?

Species: Needed Counties
Blue Dasher: Wyandot
Common Whitetail: Morgan
Eastern Forktail: Athens, Scioto
Eastern Pondhawk: Knox, Wyandot
Eastern Amberwing: Knox, Pike, Wyandot

600 Observation Goals met!

With the research grade observations for 2022, all counties that were targeted to get to 600 observations have reached the goal. Thanks to everyone that contributed.

60 Species Goals still out there.

Progress on the goal of getting all counties to 60 species is taking more time. Counties with the most need are Noble and Van Wert. They each need 10. Belmont (8), Seneca (7), and Brown (7) are next in line.

August 2/3rds +

Now over 27,000 research grade observations for 2022. With the arrival of Smoky Rubyspot and Green-striped Darner we're at 133 species for the year. Looking for Elusive Clubtail, Ocellated Darner, Striped Saddlebags, Variegated Meadowhawk. These four sp would put us at 137. The 141 for 2020 is probably out of reach unless we have some extraordinary good luck.

There are still observations coming in for earlier in the year. We are well above previous high numbers for May (4,067) and Jun (10,980). Jul numbers still below 2019 - but climbing.

Eastern Pondhawk numbers are rising quickly, sights set on taking over top spot from Blue Dasher. We should soon see a spike in the number of Autumn Meadowhawk reported. We're on track compared to recent years, with more to come - Autumn Meadowhawk recently being the top-reported species in Sep, Oct, and Nov.

Thanks to recent submissions from monicap273, we now have a number of species reported for all 88 Ohio Counties in 2022: Fragile Forktail, Widow Skimmer, Blue Dasher, Common Whitetail, and Eastern Pondhawk.

Still looking for a these two species for County Complete:

Eastern Forktail: Scioto
Eastern Amberwing: Pike

Nothing else is close. Next in line would be Ebony Jewelwing, but this is down the line with eleven counties needed, and we are at the tail end of the their season.

With recent new County Records, we're at 105 for the year. Skimmers dominate the new County Records - Painted and Great Blue with 7 each, Spangled with 5, Slaty with 4, Golden-winged with 2. Columbiana and Ottawa Co's each have 6.
