Australia is one of the top contributors to the platform, and your observations filter into the Atlas of Living Australia and are used in real-world scientific research.

During this talk, Thomas Mesaglio will explain the power of iNaturalist as a citizen science and research tool, provide a basic outline of how the platform operates, and discuss what citizen scientists have contributed and how their data have been used from an Australian perspective.

Onward and upward!

Budawang Coast Atlas of Life continues to grow at a steady pace. We have just clicked over 60,000 observations and 5320 species. 1700 people made these observations. In terms of species, leading the way is insects with 1622 species, then plants with 1670 species. Then comes ray-finned fishes with 376 species and birds with 306 species. Fungi makes a strong showing with 270 species and molluscs number 78 species.

We consistently hover around 30% of observations being unidentified. So, if you or someone you know is an expert in a particular taxon here lies a terrific opportunity to have some fun and make a valuable contribution to science. Thomas Mesaglio recently ran training on tips for setting yourself up as an identifying. See our May 20 journal entry for a link to the recording. It's well worth an hour. Thomas never fails to inspire.
