The 5th Anacostia River Bioblitz

September 16-19th, this is the BIG weekend of the year for this project: https://www.anacostiaws.org/events-and-recreation/signature-events/anacostia-river-bioblitz.html

Go out on your own and/or learn from the experts during our events. This year we will have a lot of aquatic biodiversity experts to help us understand the aquatic ecosystems better. These ecosystems also have some of the most underrepresented taxa in this project in terms of the number of observations and species observed.

Happy bioblitzing!!

Jorge

5th Anacostia River Bioblitz #AnacostiaBioblitz

We had an awesome day with over 40 people bioblitzing at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens! Kudos to the partners for helping us put up a great event.

The #anacostiabioblitz is already breaking records with 267 (app) observers, the highest number in its 5-year history, once again showing that the iNaturalist.org community in the DMV area is great. In total number of species it hasn’t surpassed 2020 but when looking at taxa the winners are reptiles with 7 species, fish with 25 species, mollusks with 16 species, arachnids with 21 species, and insects with 167 species. Tomorrow is the last day! #anacostiariver

For the River,

Jorge

Thank you all for another successful Anacostia Bioblitz!

Good morning everyone!

I would like to thank you all: partners, volunteers, observers and identifiers for another successful #Anacostiabioblitz! We had over 70 people at our public events (I have to confirm this number). We had great attendance at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and it looks like people had a great time learning about plants, mushrooms and critters.

Here's a preliminary summary from iNaturalist:

Number of observations: 2,571 (last year 2,668).
Number of species (taxa): 867 (873 last year).
Number of observers: 339, a record for our bioblitz (214 last year).
Number of identifiers: 216 (288 last year).
Also we have a record number of species observed for reptiles, fish, molluscs, arachnids, and insects.

Kudos to the top observers: @jmgconsult @onertwons @stephen220 @dossification @carrieseltzer @snowmie700 @sara_tangren @karin3513 and @sercfisheries and the top identifiers: @abookb @jmgconsult @mmmmbugs @billhubick @nana10 @erininmd @carrieseltzer @nauer1 @uconnbirdfish @sara_tangren and @ophiogomphus

We will announce the official results next week. On Wednesday evening we will host a Zoom ID party at 7 pm: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86289014334?pwd=bnM3WlpWZElzeXBkc2F3QSs5MVFYUT09 I just sent an invitation.

Also, we have bioblitz shirts in our pop up shop: https://www.bonfire.com/store/anacostia-watershed-society-pop-up-shop/

Thanks!

Jorge

5th Anacostia River Bioblitz Official Results Are In

These are the final results of our 5th #anacostiabioblitz (this past Sept. 16-19). We had a record number of participants, both iNaturalist.org app users, and people that attended our events. Participants observed a record number of species for the following groups of organisms: reptiles, fish, mollusks, arachnids, and insects.

Some notable observations:

-Bald eagles, wild turkey and a scarlet tanager.
-During the fish surveys we observed many young shad including both Alewife and American shad (a great sign for these species in the river), and a longnose gar!
-The honey bee was the most observed insect during the weekend.
-Marsh fleabanes in bloom.
-A bioluminescent mushroom!
