Fun on the Sabine River

Last weekend I went to the Sabine River public boat ramp between Longview and Lakeport for the Texas Pollinator Bioblitz. The next day, I went back to catalog the plants and other critters. Afterward, I cooled off by wading in a couple of shallow sections of the river while looking for mussels. I found five mussel species, in addition to the two I found the day before. This was exciting because usually when I go looking for mussels, I only find those horrible Asian clams.

I found a total of over 100 species for the boat ramp. Some were new to my lifelist and others were new additions to the Gregg County pokedex.

I like to try to record as many species as I can find for each location, such as a park, to give a picture of the ecosystem.

Anyway, this weekend I am going to the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, a public diamond mine. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time. I'll spend Saturday digging for diamonds and Sunday iNatting the trails. I looked at the observations for this park right before I started typing this and there are only ten, which is surprising because it is a huge tourist attraction.

Sabine River. Found on the sandy bottom. This one was alive and squirted me twice when I picked it up.
