I am a naturalist specializing in insects, particularly dragonflies, and birds (using the term "specializing" very loosely). I currently live in Amherst, Massachusetts where I occasionally write nature columns for the daily newspaper and lead programs for local bird clubs and conservation groups, and serve as the head of the northeast chapter of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas, and vice-president of the Hampshire Bird Club. I've been a contributing editor of BugGuide since roughly 2005. For a few years I worked for the World Birding Center at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, a highly biodiverse location on the Texas-Mexico border which has produced several first US records of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and other species. I have a Ph.D. on dragonflies from Duke, and a Master's from the University of Texas at Arlington on the giant waterbug Belostoma flumineum. While at Duke I co-founded the Duke Natural History Society, which brought together specialists and enthusiasts from the university, independent NGOs, and the local community to geek out over everything from woodpeckers through salamanders to liverworts and lichens. I've also worked for stints at a few bird observatories, Mass Audubon, the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and various other locations.
