Journal Entry for Entomology 322

A pseudopupil is the illusion of a pupil on an insect's eye, caused by the same adsorbtion of light as in our own, wherein that lack of relection shows up as a black spot. Now in specific insects such as Mantises these are distinct, whereas in others they're hardly visible.
While back in Georgia, Acworth, on holiday last spring I was able to spot a Red Paper Wasp or P. carolina. Now as a rule wasps have quite good sight, as do mantises, but one has highly visable pseudopupils whereas the other does not. It would be interesting to find out if this has any impact on sight, or if it's a matter of simple evolutionary diversion within the structure of the eye.

September 7th

I started at approximately 12:00 am at a patch of pine trees near the intersection of the main highway and the older road that leads to Pullman. My search that night, ending at 6am was largely unfruitful and uneventful. I was able to catch at least a fly mimic and a lady beetle. The temperature ranged from 63 degrees F. to a high of 77 degrees F. at the end of my search at 6:00 am. The date was the 7th of September, and both insects were caught in the open field.
