Making Identifications for Snapshot Cal Coast: June 23rd-July 2nd

Hi everyone!

You’re tagged in this journal post because you’re one of the top identifiers for observations made along the California coast! Some of you may have already been tagged in a similar post sent to the top marine observers in California. Thanks for contributing your expertise to identify finds! You are all key to making iNaturalist go!

Rebecca & I wanted to let you all know that the second annual Snapshot Cal Coast is happening June 23 – July 2! It’s a statewide effort to document California coastal biodiversity to better understand changes in species ranges and to get a sense of what species occur in specific coastal sites. Snapshot Cal Coast is organized by CitizenScience at the California Academy of Sciences in partnership with the California Marine Protected Area Collaborative Network.

We’re interested in species found in the rocky intertidal, sandy beaches, dunes, docks, estuaries, coastal scrub – anything along the coast from Del Norte to San Diego! Even though we are mostly focused on marine animals, we will get observations of all taxa from all coastal habitats, including birds, plants, reptiles, insects, and other terrestrial things!

Hundreds of folks will head out to the coast for these coordinated bioblitzes, June 23 – July 2. Last year over 7000 observations were made as part of Snapshot Cal Coast 2016 -and this year we have over two times as many events! In 2016, we added over 35 species that had never been recorded on iNat! We are sure with more eyes on the ground (and water) we will find many, many interesting things!

You can help, by stepping up your identifying for our Snapshot Cal Coast Project. We anticipate quite a few people new to iNaturalist participating in Snapshot Cal Coast, and getting IDs from folks like you will be hugely rewarding and will hopefully motivate them to keep on using iNat!
If you are in California, you can participate just by making observations along the coast – they will be automatically added to our Snapshot Cal Coast iNaturalist project. There are also quite a few events happening in support of Snapshot Cal Coast; not all are open to the public but those that are have links you can click to find out more information: Snapshot Cal Coast Events.

If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments or contact either one of us.

Thanks all!

This sounds cool, and I really wish I was there in person to help out with observing, but as it is, I can do as much ID-ing as I possibly can from here in NYC. :)

Neat! I won't be in CA, but you can @ me for plant IDs if you want especially for near the Santa Monica Mountains, etc

Hey @catchang and @dannym (and anyone else who was trying to click the links!) - until @rebeccafay has a chance to fix the links, you can find them all in the journal post I made for top CA coast observers, since it's pretty much the same post!: http://www.inaturalist.org/posts/10546-snapshot-cal-coast-2017

An early "thank you!" to everyone who will help us with identifying during Snapshot Cal Coast! :)

Great! We have a bioblitz happening up at Salt Point, we'd love anyone to join! First 24 people get to camp for free! https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/snapshot-cal-coast-2017-salt-point-bioblitz
Cheers!

I'm recovering from bronchitis so my time in the field won't be as extensive as I had planned. I'll put the down time to good use by IDing observations, though!
