11/17/13

I went for a walk at Jacobus Park in Wauwatosa, checking out a neighborhood where maybe I want to live. It was a mild, windy morning, with temperatures in the sixties and high humidity.

This was a short walk, because a PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) tornado watch was issued, and sure enough, I was in my basement with sirens going off about an hour later. I may be there again soon.

This differs from S. ciliolatum by having smaller heads, but both have winged petioles, purple flowers, and leaves hairy beneath.

This clone, which was growing next to a pond in sun, had stems hairy and largest leaves <3mm broad (so not tuberosus), with widest towards the middle vs. the base (so not hirsutus).

If I blow up the second picture, the stiff hairs on the back of the phyllaries are visible, which are not present in H. debilis and either absent or shorter (<0.3mm) in H. petiolaris.
