Some of Central Oregon’s gnarliest, probably oldest, Western Junipers are in the Historic Tumalo Canal area. Thin volcanic ash soils, from the Mazama blast(?) top the lava flows here. Fire has been very rare.
This singular tree is on BLM property along Cole’s Trail above Smith Rock State Park. Located a few yards west of the saddle before the trail splits, one leg dropping into Skull Hollow, the other going northerly to Gray Butte. Around 3,700’ elevation. North aspect.
