On maple wood. Asexual stage of crust. Spore have 1-2 cilia. The Anamorph grows on top of wood, the Teleomorph grows underneath. In this case, it is absent. Park.
On fallen maple. The asexual state always grows on top of the wood. Its sexual state always grow underneath. Pine Barrens. Swampy area.

The last few photos show the effects on the wood due to the fungus. Slight reddish streaks can be seen (hence the name "rufescens"). The fruiting bodies look quite green at a distance.
