Growing with Quercus agrifolia
Small shrub species, with alternate compound leaves, pinate veinage, doubly toothed margin, thorned stem.
Fruiting in streambed between rocks, mixed in with roots. Coast live oak up the hill but fruitbodies were localized on the streambed with no Q. agrifolia leaf litter, most directly attached to what I'm fairly sure were alder roots (stringy and red). Smelled like candy caps and had clear latex
