This fly was feeding on the flowers of goldenrod plants growing near the children’s playground in Ramsden Park in the city of Toronto.
This is a female of the species. The eyes do not meet in the middle at the top of the head.
The flu has a “honey bee-like” appearance. The inner margins of the spots on the second abdominal segment are rounded.
The common drone fly, is a widespread, migratory, cosmopolitan species of hover fly. It is the most widely distributed syrphid species in the world.
