With a large flock of black-fronted tern (approx. 50). Feeding in a large shallow braid of the Waimakariri.
Female wrybill and her nest (beautifully camouflaged, as always) in the Rakaia River near Barrhill. Found while doing a survey prior to engineering works scheduled to happen in the river. Started to rain just as I found the nest, so snapped a couple of quick pics and left her to it. Area marked off to avoid nest being crushed by digger.
Single kea sighted on numerous occasions over 2 week period - feeding on native plantings around Synlait milk powder manufacturing site. Healthy looking...but certainly a long way from its normal habitat! A special visitor to our site, and very nice to have him/her spend a bit of time with us. We hope he/she made it back to the alps safely after vacationing on the plains.
