on a muddy part of an otherwise clean pondshore. This is a non-native invasive species not well documented yet in New England. The last shot is not in focus. Had to grab it from a video. But is shows what it looks like from a distance.

Growing on mud after dam draw down. Using Paton’s Liverworts of Great Britain to key this species I come to R. beyrichiana. The fifth photo is the spore.

It's not often that my fieldwork results in finding a new native globally rare species to add to the flora of Massachusetts, but it happened in May. ID confirmed by Vermont moonwort expert Art Gilman, author of the New Flora of Vermont. (Arthur Haines agreed as well).

The spiral coil of the awns is worthy of a goldsmith's creation. So elegant.

Sticking my neck way out to go to this species and I sure wish I had dissected a seed capsule, and taken better photos, but i would think by plant height alone and rhizomatous growth this would key to this species. Any thoughts or corrections are welcome.
